What is the objective of the Leaders Summit?

The UN Global Compact Leaders Summit 2013: Architects of a Better World will link the enduring, universal values of the United Nations with a comprehensive architecture for business action on sustainable development priorities. With the Millennium Development Goals 2015 deadline approaching, the Leaders Summit will set the stage for business to shape and advance the post-2015 global development agenda -- unveiling an architecture to scale up and align efforts by business to contribute to UN goals and issues.

At the Leaders Summit, CEOs renew their commitment to responsible business practices and set the direction for the Global Compact’s future priorities and actions.

What is the format of the Leaders Summit?

The Leaders Summit aims to maximize interaction between participants and to advance productive debate. The Summit format will be plenary and executive working sessions. The official programme of the Leaders Summit will be held on 20 September with UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon officially opening the Leaders Summit. Numerous side-events and optional sessions, as well as a Leaders Dinner, will take place on 19 September.

Where will the Leaders Summit take place?

Due to the ongoing renovation of UN Headquarters and capacity limitations, the Leaders Summit will be held at the Grand Hyatt New York, at 109 East 42nd Street in New York City.

Ahead of the Leaders Summit official opening, the Secretary-General will join participants at the Leaders Dinner – a formal opportunity to network with the UN Global Compact community – on the evening of 19 September 2013 at the Museum of Modern Art (MoMA).

What will be the language of the Leaders Summit?

The Leaders Summit will be conducted in English. However, simultaneous interpretation of all plenary sessions will be offered in French, Spanish, Chinese and Portuguese. Interpretation will not be available during executive-level working sessions. Depending on demand, additional languages for translation services may be provided. Who will participate?

Chaired by UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon, the triennial UN Global Compact Leaders Summit is the premier UN-business event – bringing together chief executives with leaders from civil society, Government and the United Nations.

The 4th UN Global Compact Leaders Summit will be a historic gathering with over 1,000 top executives, Heads of State and Cabinet level Government officials, deans of business schools, NGO leaders and UN heads expected to attend. Participants will reflect the composition and regional distribution of the various stakeholder groups within the Global Compact.  As it is widely recognized that women's empowerment is a key driver of sustainable development, organizations are strongly encouraged to strive for gender-balance when nominating representatives. We are proud that the Women's Empowerment Principles is currently the UN Global Compact's largest special initiative with 600 CEO signers.

How many people from our organization can attend?

Chief executives may extend a Leaders Summit invitation to up to 3 senior-level representatives of their company. Non-business participants may invite one additional representative.  Please note that due to the high-level nature of the Leaders Summit, only senior-level nominations will be accepted and organizations are strongly encouraged to strive for gender-balanced delegations.

What happens if our top executive is unable to attend?

Top executives who are not able to participate are invited to designate another C-suite or Board member to attend as head of delegation.

Additionally, chief executives may extend a Leaders Summit invitation to up to 3 senior-level representatives of their company. Non-business participants may invite one additional representative.

Please note that due to the high-level nature of the Leaders Summit, only senior-level nominations will be accepted and organizations are strongly encouraged to strive for gender-balanced delegations.

Do all participants (including associates) need to register in advance?

Yes. All participants must register via the Leaders Summit online registration system. Only individuals who have received an invitation will be able to access the registration system. . Please be aware that emails and letters to the Global Compact Office cannot be processed and will not be accepted as a substitute for online registration. Please refer to the Participants page or email  leaderssummit@unglobalcompact.org for information on eligibility to receive an invitation.

Security passes granting access to Leaders Summit activities will only be issued to registered attendees.

Can a top executive bring his/her assistant?

No. The Global Compact Leaders Summit can only accommodate invited and registered participants.

Will there be speaking opportunities for my organization?

The Leaders Summit is designed to share learnings from the Global Compact and other representatives of business, industry, investors, governments, local authorities, civil society and the UN. There will be a limited number of speaking opportunities for business during the Leaders Summit, and candidates will be directly contacted by event organizers.

Is there a registration fee?

Yes, registration fees apply to all participants with the exception of: Government, United Nations and Leaders Summit sponsors. Please refer to the registration fees chart for further information.

How do I obtain a visa? 

During online registration for the Leaders Summit, participants will be prompted to check a box indicating whether they will need to apply for a travel visa to the United States of America. Once their Forum registration is completed and paid, participants requiring a visa will subsequently receive a letter of support from the UN Global Compact Office via email. The letter should be submitted along with other documentation when applying for a visa. Please refer to your local consulate for detailed information.

How can I make a hotel reservation?

A limited number of rooms have been pre-reserved for participants at the Grand Hyatt New York. Participants are strongly encouraged to secure hotel accommodation as early as possible in order to benefit from discounted rates and conditions. Leaders Summit Registration will open on 19 September 2013 and staff will be available to assist participants on-site.

As an individual, can I participate in the Leaders Summit?

The Leaders Summit is by invitation only and is open to chief executives and senior management participants of the Global Compact and its sister initiatives, as well as selected participants of UN agencies or partners.
